Saturdays Sept 10 – Nov 12
from 10 to 1

If you’ve hit a road block in your writing, workshopped the same story four times but never really revised it, or are finally ready to submit the masterpiece that’s been living in a drawer to literary journals, this workshop will give you a chance to polish a single story until it gleams. Rather than a traditional writing workshop in which each person’s writing is discussed each week, this course will consist of rigorous weekly exercises guiding each writer through a new draft of a story. The specific revision tasks each week will range from overhauling the structure to writing new scenes to changing point of view to sharpening dialogue, and they will depend on goals tailored to your particular story. This workshop is designed to give you concrete and applicable tools for revision so you can conquer the fear of messing up, elevate and open up your writing, fulfill the potential of what you’ve laid to the page, and (hopefully) get your submissions out of slush piles. Bring a draft of the story you want to revise to the first class.

Claire Fuqua Anderson is a Writing Fellow and Visiting Assistant Professor of English at the University of Houston, where she received her MFA in fiction. She teaches first-year writing and literature, and she has served as Assistant Editor of fiction and nonfiction at Gulf Coast. She is currently working on a novel.

I took this class at the beginning of the year and it was well worth the time, effort and cost. Claire is a great teacher – very encouraging and thorough in her critiques of work submitted – and she brought many published works for our consideration, especially in re: revision. I learned a lot about technique and craft as well as writer/editor relationships.
I would recommend this class to anyone who has a few pieces to write, rewrite, chop, dice, cut up and toss into the air to see how it lands – all the while knowing the work will be much improved by the process. One caveat – come to the class prepared to do some work each week, applying tricks of the trade that are highlighted during class in order to reap the most benefits.

I took this workshop while in my last semester of college, so I was pretty busy and I wish that I could have had more time to make the most out of it. Nonetheless, everyone was very encouraging in the workshop and the different perspectives were very helpful. Claire was a great leader. I really liked that she took a lot of time to discuss the creative process as well as technical parts of writing because figuring out your own process can often be the biggest challenge in writing.

One of the best writing classes I’ve taken! Practical, concrete approaches to revision combined with a teacher who is a close, generous, and supportive reader really allowed me to gain new perspective on my work and offered me the momentum I needed to work on a piece that I felt had potential but just couldn’t move forward on. I was able to make good progress on the piece I revised for this class because of the well-planned weekly exercises, readings, and discussions. (I’m still pulling out and referring to class notes and materials.) Claire is an amazing teacher who creates an atmosphere that fuels creativity and motivation.

During the Revision course, I worked on a story I had started writing over a year ago but didn’t seem to be able to finish. With Clair’s guidance I worked on different elements of the story and workshopped it twice. Clair’s feedbacks were invaluable. She is smart, very knowledgeable and thorough. I’m looking forward to working with her again in the future as I’m sure her critiques and suggestions will greatly improve my stories.

I just finished up the Revision Shazaam! Workshop and I’m already missing Claire and the rest of the group—great experience, great group of people. Between the readings, exercises, and group discussions, I’ve come away from the class with a new appreciation and enthusiasm for revision—not to mention an arsenal of new revision tools. Claire brings a warmth, intelligence, and humor to this often painful process that is one of a kind. I look forward to taking more of her classes.

Great class. Claire’s detailed review was especially appreciated. She and others were always focused on helping us. The readings we did backed up the work that occurred on our won. I will take another class if it doesn’t conflict.

    (verified owner):

Revision has to be the most daunting part of writing for me, other than the publishing process. Claire removes the intimidation from this, using a variety of techniques: craft exploration, using varied texts and perspectives (Butler, Almond, Cron); thematic emphasis (character, perspective, tension, dialogue, narrative strategy, etc.); an illuminating line and content editing progressive case study; examples by masters of the short fiction form; and facilitation of lively discussion during the workshopping of participant-submitted pieces. I found the approach thorough and insightful without becoming ponderous or overwhelming. Claire’s feedback for my own writing was detailed, thoughtful, constructive, encouraging, and helpful. She provides just the right balance of pointing the way forward and affirming the strength in what is already there. This workshop is well worth your money if you are interested in improving your writing through revision.
