Product Description

The Grackle Writing Studio is a small upstairs garage apartment/writing studio on the northern end of the Houston Heights, right off the N. Main Exit of i-45.  It’s cozy, the classes cap at 12, and our students are curious and intelligent people who help grow the feeling of community and camaraderie most writers need to maintain a happy and productive writing life.  The workshop leaders have all had years of experience publishing and teaching writing in universities, schools, and community workshop settings.

We also create classes tailored to specific locales and venues for trainings, parties, or retreats. We have worked extensively in private, medical, corporate, school, and non-profit settings.

This is a wonderful class that involves workshopping your own writing, providing constructive review of others’, reading a well-curated selection of writing from established authors and in-class discussion and impromptu writing exercises based on them. Discussions are organized in a set manner, but the conversations that result are curious and open-ended. Miah leads the group towards thoughtful ways to evaluate setting, character, plot and overall narrative structure. Participants hail from a wide variety of professional and academic backgrounds and are of all ages. Respect, humor and great intelligence abound!

I love Wednesdays with Miah and my friends in the group. I’m a relatively new writer. Everyone helps with critiques of my writing. The variety of viewpoints is a big help to me. I also enjoy reading their pieces, anything from memoir to fiction. We are a diverse group.

I joined Miah’s Wednesday group after many years of not writing at all. In the warm, supportive environment which Miah facilitates, I did begin to write again–and in the process, found a new group of like-minded friends. Highly recommend!

This class is wonderful; full of interesting, lively, kind people who are a joy to be around. Reviews are encouraging and constructive. Miah makes everyone feel comfortable and accepted, yet has the knack of knowing how to encourage us all individually to push ourselves.

The workshop with Miah Arnold was inspiring and helpful. I would recommend it to anyone! Critiques from Miah and classmates were gentle but very constructive. Miah has created an unusual way to offer encouragement and criticism. In-class writing projects and reading assignments were thought-provoking and useful.

Miah’s Wednesday mornings are fabulous. I have taken various classes with Miah and have participated in this workshop several semesters. I have never been disappointed. The reading materials are varied and interesting, the pace is comfortable. and the group is cohesive, friendly, and hard working. Miah is kind, knowledgeable, and her critiques to my work have always been extremely useful. The workshops include discussions about reading assignments, in-class writing exercises that follow all kinds of prompts, critique of each other’s in-class work, and extensive discussion/close reading of at home writing. Every session we explore the at-home work of two of us, which is due the week before, and which includes memoir sections, short stories, novel chapters, essay-like compositions, or anything else we might want to submit. The discussions are always interesting: the topics range from form, tone, and such, to profound exchanges about writers’ responsibility, writing ethical concerns, writing psychological aspects, etc. Lastly, the atmosphere of the workshop is encouraging, positive, open-minded, and fun. I recommend this workshop without reservation.
